Urban Specialist – 2‑year Fixed‑term Role

About the role

The World Bank is seeking an Urban Specialist to support rapid urbanization challenges in Sub‑Saharan Africa, based in Libreville, Gabon. This two‑year fixed‑term position will contribute to building resilient, inclusive cities and help countries recover from disasters and climate impacts.

Key responsibilities

• Analyze urbanization trends and risks in West and Central Africa, focusing on disaster vulnerability and climate change.
• Provide technical advice to governments, civil society and development partners on urban planning, infrastructure resilience and risk reduction.
• Support the design and implementation of projects that improve urban services, reduce informal settlements and enhance disaster preparedness.
• Collaborate with World Bank teams and external stakeholders to integrate data, research and technology into urban development solutions.
• Prepare reports, policy briefs and knowledge products for internal and external audiences.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in urban planning, geography, environmental studies, development economics or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in urban development, disaster risk management or climate‑resilient planning, preferably in Africa.
• Demonstrated ability to work with government agencies, NGOs and multilateral partners.
• Strong analytical and communication skills in English; French is an advantage.
